1. International Family Mediation

Family mediation, in Burundi is not known nor commonly implemented and encouraged by the State. Family mediation is not a professional activity in Burundi.

There is, to our knowledge, no specialised structure for international family mediation in Burundi.

1) Burundi is not a Party to the 1980 Hague Convention.

The 1980 Hague Convention: a multilateral treaty which provides procedural guidelines on child protection and return in cases of cross-border abduction.

2) Burundi is not a Party to the 1996 Hague Convention.

The 1996 Hague Convention: a multilateral treaty which covers civil measures of protection concerning children, parental responsibility and contact, children's property, public measures of protection or care and matters of representation.

You can determine whether countries relevant to your case are Parties, or not, to The 1980 Hague Convention on International Child Abduction and/or The 1996 Hague Convention on Child Protection in order to locate the appropriate central authority. As for the 1980 Hague Convention, you can check whether the Convention is in force between two specific States in the Spreadsheet showing acceptances of accessions to the Child Abduction Convention.

The Ministry of Human Rights, Social Affairs and Gender supports victims of gender-based violence and facilitates access to basic social services through its community and family development centers (website in French).

The Institution of the Ombudsman of Burundi can be requested by individuals to carry out social actions as well as the defence of human rights (website in French).

Réseau Citoyens-Citizens Network (RCN) Justice & Democracy is developing a Program for enhanced neighbourhood justice and better access for women to justice in Burundi. It offers psycho-social support, medical referral, legal assistance (representation) for the most difficult cases related to sexual and gender based violence. The Association of Girl Guides of Burundi (AGB) intervenes in various filed of expertise such as education on sexual and reproductive health, the rights of the child, non-violent communication and social solidarity (website in French).

The Association of Single Mums for Peace and Development (AMC) intervenes in the field of sexual and reproductive law, legal accompaniment, education and economic and social empowerment. The AMC work for the ownership of economic and social rights and promotes the rights of young women, including those of young teenage mothers and single mothers. NTURENGAHO Association is a non-profit organisation that provides young girls who are victims of sexual and gender-based violence in particular with legal, medical, psychosocial and community care. The association also contributes to prevent and to fight against teenage pregnancy (awareness-raising and training). You can visit their Facebook page here. Home-Start Burundi is a non-profit organisation providing free-of-charge and confidential home-visiting and practical assistance to young families experiencing difficulties. They could consult with other national, municipal and independent aid organisations to be able to attend to the needs of families. 2 Schemes of Home-Start Burundi serve the communities in Cibitoke and Bujumbura Rural.

4. Child Welfare Services

FVS-AMADE Burundi protects the rights of orphans and vulnerable children in Burundi. The organisation provides legal support, birth registration assistance, education and psychological support, and empowers solidarity groups to take care of children in need. SOS Children's Villages in Burundi supports Burundian children by providing day care, education, vocational training and medical assistance. It aims to strengthen families in order to enable children who are at risk of losing parental care to grow up within their own family, for example by offering guidance on income-generating skills and parenting practices. Caritas Burundi works for the protection of human rights and the protection of vulnerable children through the strengthening of partnerships and the promotion of community solidarity in Bujumbura, Bubanza, Rutana, Bururi, Gitega, Muyinga, Ngozi and Ruyigi (website in French).

Stamm Foundation (BurundiKids) has day care centers in Bujumbura, Gitega, Kayanza, Muramvya and Muyinga that offer social, psychological, medical and legal support to orphans and young single mothers. The foundation also has a medical center in Kajaga and educational centers in Bujumbura, Kajaga, Gitega, Ngozi, Muyinga and Rumonge. Terre des Hommes Switzerland which participates in the training of more than 100 social workers and ten lawyers to improve their cooperation in the field of child protection can refer to the services of local associations (website in French).

5. Support to Bi-national Couples, Cross-Cultural and Migrant Families

The Family Links Network of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement helps to find a family member, restore contact with a family member or be reunited with a family member. This service is provided for unaccompanied minors or separated children, child soldiers, refugees, detainees, civilians who have lost contact with a family member living abroad due to armed conflict or other situations of violence, natural or man-made disasters as well as in cases when other means of communication (telephone lines, postal system, etc.) are disrupted or not available.

International Organization of Migration (IOM) current main activities in Burundi are related to Refugee resettlement and reintegration, Re-integration of Burundian former refugees and expelled migrants, Emergency and Post Crisis Assistance.
